And glad to find, on again looking at it,
It meant even less to me than I had thought –
You know the ship is moving when you see
The boxes on the quayside sliding away
And growing smaller – and feel a calm delight
When the port’s cleared and the coast out of sight,
And ships are few, each on its proper course,
With no occasion for approach or discourse.

Day after day, night after night, Francisco Hernandez Jr. rode the subway. He had a MetroCard, $10 in his pocket and a book bag on his lap. As the human tide flowed and ebbed around him, he sat impassively, a gangly 13-year-old boy in glasses and a red hoodie, speaking to no one.

“Like if you’re gonna wear a boot type thing like that my inclination is to say don’t fight it and go with the higher cut one. As a tiebreaker I keep asking myself which one I’d rather see a girl naked in. On one hand I like the moccasin, Indian-like thread design coming off the lower cut ones because it makes me think of making poor decisions after smoking some peyote. On...

TED talk you should watch:
At TEDIndia, Pranav Mistry demos several tools that help the physical world interact with the world of data — including a deep look at his SixthSense device and a new, paradigm-shifting paper “laptop.” In an onstage Q&A, Mistry says he’ll open-source the software behind SixthSense, to open its possibilities to all.

I think I’m doing OK. It’s a lot to do with the people around me. The idea behind it all is to keep it simple, and I think we’ve always looked for a place to express ourself as simply and honestly and expressly… like, being dragged over to our grandma’s house to look at a family photo book… now there’s a medium to see that or do that as it’s being done and not be bombarded with seven photobooks...

Elizabeth Gilbert muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses — and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person “being” a genius, all of us “have” a genius. It’s a funny, personal and surprisingly moving talk.
So good. So worth the 20 minutes.

On things not worth the scrimp.
In an experiment of frugality and simplicity (two things my life could use a tad more of), I’ve been using a drugstore brand eye makeup remover for the past two months. It worked well enough, but I never felt like my eyes were free of every last bit of makeup. That’s both a testament to long wear makeup and a fault of the drugstore brand. Despite promising myself I’d finish out...
